After more than thirty years of service, military awards, medals and decorations for extraordinary heroism in combat, distinguished US Navy Captain Pete Mitchell, call sign Maverick, finds himself exactly where he belongs: pushing the limits as a top test pilot. Having spent years avoiding promotions after the events of Top Gun (1986), Maverick must now confront the ugly past and an uncertain future while tasked with training the next generation of elite fighter pilots for a nearly impossible suicide mission. As the veteran naval aviator prepares the brilliant graduates for the top-secret assignment, stretching the rules to the breaking point, Mitchell has to face an equally critical challenge: navigate through an uncomfortable relationship with a hotshot lieutenant holding a grudge. Can Maverick and his Top Guns perform a miracle, give the enemy hell, and come back home in one piece?
Cast: Capt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell - Tom Cruise
Lt. Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw - Miles Teller
Adm. Tom Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky - Val Kilmer
Director: Joseph Kosinski
Worldwide Box Office: $1.2billion
Trivia: At the insistence of Tom Cruise, minimal green screen and CGI aerial shots exist in the film, and even the close up cockpit shots were taken during real in-flight sequences. This meant that much of the cast had to undergo extensive G-force training sessions to withstand the physical demands of G-force pressures during flights.
According to Miles Teller, the cast got to choose their own call signs. He chose "Rooster" because it was in the same family as "Goose."
Both Goose in Top Gun (1986) and Rooster in the sequel tell Maverick, "Come on Mav, do some of that pilot shit."
Awards and Nominations: Nominated for 6 Oscar's including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Film Editing and nominated for 4 BAFTA award's.
Lulu's verdict: I thought a 30 year gap might have been too long, missed out on generations but boy was I wrong. This was an absolute adrenalin rush from start to finish and is a must to be seen on the big screen as loud and as big as possible. Not often I applaud a film when the credits role but "BRAVO".
